We are so excited to release the launch of our brand new Oyster Shell Collection. At Hermosa, we believe the world is your oyster, and we want to remind you to dream big. You can do anything you set your mind to. Oysters are also known as a symbol of protection, abundance, and fertility.
In the South, oysters are a way to bring people together. According to history, oyster harvesting provided an opportunity for the Gullah Geechee people to settle in this area and create an economy to support their families. Fast forward to today, oysters are a way to bring together friends and family that gather for oyster roasts to enjoy the abundance of these salty bivalves.
Oysters are vital to our coastal marine habitats, supporting over 120 marine species. They also provide protection to the shoreline from erosion, flooding, and storms. One single oyster filters 50 gallons of water each day, which helps keep our waters clean and safe for recreational activities. Did you know that oysters can be recycled back into our waters and are able to regrow?
Growing up in Charleston, our founder Haley has been an avid shell collector since she was a little girl. She has always had a special affinity for oysters. Naturally, she was inspired to create jewelry with the shells.
For years now we have been working on developing a more sustainable way to produce our oyster shell jewelry. Rather than using real oysters in this collection, we have shifted to creating a metal replication of shells through the lost wax casting method. This process involves taking an organic shell and making a mold of it. The metal oyster shells are all consistent and will last much longer than real oyster shells.
We thoughtfully named each piece of jewelry in our Oyster Collection after coastal islands and creeks in Charleston, SC. This collection is for the ocean lover, the beachcomber, and the coastal chick. Whether you're looking for shark's teeth on the beach or eating steamed oysters at The Darling Oyster Bar, you can wear a piece of the sea wherever the tide takes you.
